An Alabama resident named Joe Buddy Caine successfully removed himself from the gene pool in 1995 when he and a friend made a really good decision when drunk: to play a game of ‘catch’. With a rattlesnake. Which bit them both. Whereas Joe’s partner recovered, he wasn’t so lucky. Well done, Joe, great idea for a game.

In 1988 Ivan McGuire remembered to pack his video camera to film his parachute jump from a plane flying two miles above North Carolina. The problem was that it was only after throwing himself out of the aircraft that he realised that he had forgotten a slightly more important piece of equipment: his parachute. So although he managed to film the jump, it was unfortunately one to his death.

David Grundman was having great fun in 1982, firing off his shotgun at some innocent cacti in the desert. His grasp of the fundamental laws of physics can’t have been too great though, as attested by the position in which he was standing when he fired a few shots at an eight-metre tall Saguaro cactus... he was so close to it that when a four-metre section broke off, it fell straight onto his head, crushing him to death. Cacti across the desert must surely have rejoiced at the just retribution doled out by their fallen comrade with its last mortal act...

Lava lamps are undoubtedly fascinating, but generally most people stick to watching them slowly gloop around and say ‘oooh’ and ‘aah’. But Phillip Quinn decided he’d investigate the properties of his device a little more in depth, and figured it would be interesting to see what happened when he heated the lamp up on his stove, hoping for something unusual. He got his wish to a certain extent: the heat caused his lamp to explode, and a metal shard pierced his heart, killing him instantly.

Who hasn’t looked at a shopping trolley and drunkenly decided it would make for a great temporary vehicle? But even with significant amounts of alcohol coursing through the system, most people still have that tiny voice that says ‘Don’t do this on a main road. Especially if that main road is a huge hill.’ Robin Wahlgreen chose to ignore that voice of good sense, and jumped into his wireframe chariot at the top of a long, steep Sydney hill with a speed limit of 60kph. Ignoring both sense and the highway code, Wahlgreen reached a speed of 80kph on his thrilling ride downhill, before crashing into an oncoming car and being flung from the shopping trolley, dying at the scene from massive trauma.

Michael Anderson Godwin was an inmate on death row in 1989. Yet it seems that the gods weren’t content with the timescale allocated by the American justice system. One night, Godwin became frustrated that his TV wasn’t working properly, and so decided to take it apart to try and fix it. Stupidly, he conducted this unauthorised repair work whilst the TV was plugged in, and he was sitting on a metal toilet.
